Spelling practice in disguise
Second graders meet many words that break the simple phonics rules they've just learned. Words like because, thought and through need extra attention to get right. Looking for those letters in a grid makes children notice the letter order, including the silent ones that are easy to skip when they write.
Using the list for more than the puzzle
- Read through the words together and clap the syllables.
- After solving, sort the words by number of syllables.
- Copy the words in alphabetical order for a second activity.
- Write three sentences, each using at least two words from the list.
Why this level fits
The 14 × 14 grid and diagonal words give a real challenge without feeling impossible. Most second graders can complete this page in 15 to 20 minutes, which makes it good for a literacy station or a Friday review.
Swap in your words
Type this week's spelling list into the word box. The tool tells you if a word won't fit the grid, so you can make it larger or remove the word. It's a quick way to make a new review page each week from your own list.
