Fact fluency is the goal

By the end of 1st grade, most curricula expect children to add and subtract within 20 quickly and accurately. That takes regular, short practice with fresh problems, which is exactly what a generator is good at. Print a sheet of 20 problems each morning, time it once a week, and watch the score improve.

Choosing the right math sheet

  • Early in the year: addition within 10, horizontal layout, to check facts from kindergarten.
  • Mid-year: addition and subtraction within 20, mixed on one page.
  • For a challenge: switch to vertical layout to prepare for two-digit work in 2nd grade.

Answer keys print on a separate page, so children can check their own work, or you can mark a stack in minutes.

Reading practice that feels like a break

1st graders are ready for word searches at the Medium level, where words run across, down and diagonally. Holiday puzzles add spelling practice to the days before a break. Ask children to sort the words they found by number of letters or syllables when they finish. Bingo is a whole-class game that practises listening and reading at the same time; the sight word set is perfect for children still building their reading vocabulary.

Seasonal sheets

Thanksgiving and Christmas math pages use the same skills with a festive border and theme icons. Children feel they're doing something special while the practice stays exactly on level.
