Reading practice that feels like a game
Sight words have to be recognised instantly, and that takes lots of repetition. Bingo provides it without the boredom of flashcards: children scan their card for the word you call, again and again, and want to keep playing. This set covers all 40 Dolch pre-primer words, the first list most kindergarten classes learn, including the, and, said, where, yellow and funny.
Built for small readers
The cards are 4 × 4 with big, clear letters in the plain print style children see in early readers. There is no free space, so every square is a word to read. Each card uses 16 of the 40 words, which means cards are all different and a round takes a sensible ten minutes.
How to play in a reading group
- Say the word, use it in a short sentence, then say it again: "Said. 'Hello,' said the cat. Said."
- For a harder round, show the word on a card without saying it, so children must read it.
- Have the winner read back their line out loud. That's one more read of each word.
Make it match your list
Replace the words with your school's own list, this week's spelling words or the primer list for later in the year. With fewer than 16 words, switch to a 3 × 3 card. Print in plain black to save ink, or choose a seasonal theme for a holiday reading group.
