Regrouping, one step at a time
Second grade is when children add and subtract within 100 using place value. "Regrouping" (also called carrying) is the big new idea: when the ones add up to 10 or more, ten ones become one ten. Every problem on this sheet needs at least one regroup, so the skill gets real practice instead of showing up now and then.
Teaching sequence that works
- First, "No regrouping" so children trust the column method.
- Then "With regrouping", this sheet's setting.
- Finally "Mixed", so they decide each time whether a regroup is needed. That is the real test of understanding.
Subtraction with borrowing
Change the operation to Subtraction and keep "With regrouping" selected. Every problem then needs borrowing from the tens, and the answers are never negative.
Checking work
The answer key prints on the last page. Ask students to check with the inverse operation before looking: add the answer to the bottom number to get the top number. It builds the habit of checking their own work and cuts down on careless mistakes.
