Matching the kindergarten standard
Most kindergarten programmes expect children to add and subtract within 10 fluently by the end of the year, and to add within 5 quickly in their heads. This sheet starts with numbers from 0 to 5, so every sum is 10 or less. When your child is ready, raise "Largest number" to 10 for sums up to 20.
Tips for teachers
- Fifteen problems fits one morning work slot. Go down to 8–10 for children who tire quickly.
- Use the answer key for quick self-checking at a math centre.
- Print the same settings with a new seed for a matching homework page that isn't a copy.
Tips for parents
Keep sessions short, five to ten minutes. Let your child use fingers, counters or a drawing. Using fingers isn't cheating at this age: it's how the strategy develops. If a sheet feels frustrating, switch the worksheet type to Picture addition, where both groups are drawn and your child counts them all.
When addition is solid, change the operation to Subtraction and keep the numbers small. That builds the "take away" idea on the same numbers.
