Moving on from pictures
Once a child can add with pictures, the next step is the number sentence alone. These sixteen sums have small numbers, written across the page the way children will see them in early math books. It's a good check in December of what has stuck since the start of the year.
Facts worth knowing by heart
Sums within 10 are the base for almost everything that follows. Watch how your child gets each answer. Counting on fingers is fine for now, but over time some facts should simply be known. Doubles such as 2 + 2 and 4 + 4 tend to come first, and pairs that make 10 are especially useful later on.
Quick games using the page
- Time how long one page takes, and try to beat it tomorrow rather than racing other children.
- Color each answer of 5 in red and each answer of 10 in green.
- Pick any answer and find a different pair of numbers that makes it.
When to move on
If your child gets nearly all of these right without much counting, try the Christmas addition within 20 page. If the page is a struggle, go back to picture addition for a while, which uses the same ideas with more support. Press "New sheet" for fresh problems, and print the answer key to mark it together.
