Holiday handwriting practice
December is a busy month in the classroom, and this sheet keeps writing practice going while matching the season. It has eight short Christmas words: tree, star, bell, gift, snow, elf, Santa and joy. Each row starts with a solid word with stroke-order arrows, followed by dotted copies.
Why these words
They are short, mostly three or four letters, and many follow simple phonics patterns: st in star, ll in bell, sn in snow. That makes the sheet useful for kindergarten readers, not only for tracing. Santa is the only capitalised word, a good chance to talk about names.
Change the word list
Type your own words in the box, one per line, up to 20. Try a class list of what children want to give or do this Christmas, or seasonal words like candy cane, reindeer, cookie and sled. Long lists split onto extra pages automatically.
Ideas for the classroom
- Write each word on a paper ornament after tracing, and hang the ornaments on a class tree.
- Draw a picture next to each word in the empty rows.
- Use the words to write a short card to a family member.
For a quieter Christmas activity, pair this with the Christmas word search, which uses many of the same words.
