Seeing what addition means
By November, most kindergarteners can count to 10 but may not yet connect that to the plus sign. Picture addition bridges the gap. Each row shows two groups of leaves with a plus sign between them, and your child counts everything to find the total. Six big rows leave plenty of room for small hands.
Two strategies to listen for
- Counting all: the child starts at one and counts every leaf. This is where nearly everyone begins.
- Counting on: the child says the first group's number, then keeps counting through the second group. When you hear this, it's a real step forward, so point it out and praise it.
A five-minute Thanksgiving centre
Put the sheet out with a cup of dried corn kernels or small counters. Children build each group on the table, push the two together and count. They then write the answer in the box and check their work with a partner.
