Counting that feels like fall
A pile of leaves is one of the first things young children want to count, so this page puts that idea on paper. Eight boxes each show a group of leaves, and your child writes how many in the box beside them. Numbers go up to 10, and the sheet deals out the whole range rather than repeating the same few.
Before you hand it over
Collect a few real leaves or acorns on a walk and count them on the table first. Moving real objects makes it clear that each thing is counted once. Then the pictures on the page make sense straight away.
Helping a child who gets stuck
- Touch each leaf and say the number aloud, or cross it off with a crayon.
- If writing numerals is still hard, write the number lightly and let them trace over it.
- Set "Numbers up to" to 5 for a younger child, and go up again when counting feels easy.
For the Thanksgiving table
Keep a few copies in your bag for the wait before dinner. Press "New sheet" for different numbers, so cousins can work side by side without copying.
