How to write A and a
Capital A takes three strokes. Start at the top line and slant down to the left, go back to the same point and slant down to the right, then draw the cross bar a little below the middle. Lowercase a starts just under the dashed midline: curve up and around to the left in a circle, then lift the pencil and pull a straight line down on the right side.
The A sound
A is a vowel, so it has more than one sound: the short a in ant and apple, and the long a in acorn, where it says its own name.
Words to say and draw: ant, apple, arm, acorn, alligator.
What's on the sheet
The first A and the first a are solid, with numbered dots and arrows showing where each stroke starts and which way it goes. The rest of each row is dotted for tracing. Next comes a row of a words to trace, then an empty row for writing A and a alone. Choose Large for Pre-K or Medium for kindergarten, or switch to uppercase or lowercase only.
Activity idea
Fold a paper plate in half to make an alligator mouth and glue paper triangle teeth along the edge. Spread out letter cards and let the alligator "eat" only the A and a cards, chomping as it goes.
