How to write X and x

X is two slanted strokes that cross in the middle: first from the top left down to the bottom right, then from the top right down to the bottom left. Capital X uses the top line; lowercase x starts at the midline.

The X sound

X usually sounds like /ks/ and comes at the end of a word, as in fox, box, six and wax. Very few words start with x, and those that do, like xylophone, sound different.

Words with x: fox, box, six, wax, x-ray.

What's on the sheet

The first X and the first x are solid, with numbered dots and arrows showing where each stroke starts and which way it goes. The rest of each row is dotted for tracing. Next comes a row of x words to trace, then an empty row for writing X and x alone. Choose Large for Pre-K or Medium for kindergarten, or switch to uppercase or lowercase only.

Activity idea

Draw a treasure map of your room or garden and mark the hiding place with a big X. Hide a small toy there and let your child follow the map.
