How to write D and d

Capital D: pull the straight line down first, then go back to the top and make one big curve round to the bottom of the line. Lowercase d is not a backwards b. It starts with a circle, curving counter-clockwise from just below the midline, then adds a tall line on the right from the top line to the baseline.

The D sound

D is made by tapping the tongue just behind the top teeth, as in dog and duck. If b and d get muddled, remind your child that d starts like c: "c, then up and down."

Words to say and draw: dog, duck, drum, door, dinosaur.

What's on the sheet

The first D and the first d are solid, with numbered dots and arrows showing where each stroke starts and which way it goes. The rest of each row is dotted for tracing. Next comes a row of d words to trace, then an empty row for writing D and d alone. Choose Large for Pre-K or Medium for kindergarten, or switch to uppercase or lowercase only.

Activity idea

Make a drum from an empty oatmeal tub. Say a word, and your child beats the drum once only if it starts with d: dog, cat, door, duck, sun, drum.
