How to write J and j
Capital J is one stroke: start at the top line, pull down, then curve to the left along the bottom like a fishing hook. Lowercase j starts at the midline, goes down past the baseline into the space below, hooks to the left, and gets a dot on top.
The J sound
J makes the sound at the start of jam, jet and jar. Ask your child to feel their jaw drop as they say it.
Words to say and draw: jam, jet, jar, jump, jellyfish.
What's on the sheet
The first J and the first j are solid, with numbered dots and arrows showing where each stroke starts and which way it goes. The rest of each row is dotted for tracing. Next comes a row of j words to trace, then an empty row for writing J and j alone. Choose Large for Pre-K or Medium for kindergarten, or switch to uppercase or lowercase only.
Activity idea
Fill a jar with paper slips, some showing J or j and some showing other letters. Your child pulls out a slip, and every time it is a J they do a jumping jack.
