How to write I and i
Capital I is a line down, then a short bar across the top and another across the bottom. Lowercase i is the shortest letter of all: a small line from the midline to the baseline, then lift the pencil and add a dot above. Remind your child that the dot comes last.
The I sound
I is a vowel: short in ink, inch and insect, and long in ice and island, where it says its own name.
Words to say and draw: ink, inch, igloo, insect, iguana.
What's on the sheet
The first I and the first i are solid, with numbered dots and arrows showing where each stroke starts and which way it goes. The rest of each row is dotted for tracing. Next comes a row of i words to trace, then an empty row for writing I and i alone. Choose Large for Pre-K or Medium for kindergarten, or switch to uppercase or lowercase only.
Activity idea
Build an igloo from cotton balls or mini marshmallows. Each time your child spots an i in a picture book, they add one more block to the igloo.
