How to write Y and y

Capital Y: slant down from the top left to the middle, then, from the top right, slant to the same point and keep going straight down. Lowercase y is a short slant from the midline to the baseline, then a long slant from the right side that goes down past the baseline.

The Y sound

At the start of a word, y makes the sound in yak, yes and yarn. At the end of a word it often works like a vowel, as in happy or my.

Words to say and draw: yak, yes, yarn, yellow, yogurt.

What's on the sheet

The first Y and the first y are solid, with numbered dots and arrows showing where each stroke starts and which way it goes. The rest of each row is dotted for tracing. Next comes a row of y words to trace, then an empty row for writing Y and y alone. Choose Large for Pre-K or Medium for kindergarten, or switch to uppercase or lowercase only.

Activity idea

Cut a Y shape from card and let your child wrap yellow yarn around it. It is great fine-motor practice, and afterwards they can trace the Y with a finger.
