How to write Q and q

Capital Q is an O drawn counter-clockwise from the top, plus a short slanted tail at the bottom right that crosses the circle. Lowercase q is a circle like a, then a straight line down on the right, from the midline to the bottom of the space below the baseline.

The Q sound

Q is almost always followed by u, and together they say /kw/, as in queen, quilt and quack.

Words to say and draw: queen, quilt, quack, quiet, question.

What's on the sheet

The first Q and the first q are solid, with numbered dots and arrows showing where each stroke starts and which way it goes. The rest of each row is dotted for tracing. Next comes a row of q words to trace, then an empty row for writing Q and q alone. Choose Large for Pre-K or Medium for kindergarten, or switch to uppercase or lowercase only.

Activity idea

Make a paper crown and glue on pairs of letter cards, always a Q with a u beside it, to show that the two letters travel together.
